Film screening: Bhopal: A Prayer For Rain
Welcome to a screening of the film Bhopal: A Prayer For Rain + discussion with the Amnesty Student Group in Gothenburg!
On the night to the 3rd of December 1984, soon exactly 35 years ago, the habitants of Bhopal, Central India, and nearby towns became victims of the worst industrial distaster in human history. An incident at a pesticide plant in the city caused a gas leak that resulted in 7000-10,000 immediate deaths. Another 10,000 people has since then died through the years and around 150,000 people suffer from chronical diseases or severe health issues.
The company responsible, Dow Chemical (before Union Carbide), has still not sanitised the ground around the pesticide plant or shown up in Indian court to answer for this disaster, despite being called there several times. The people of Bhopal are therefore still fighting for compensation and justice.
This film is based on the true events leading up to the gas leak, and the purpose of the screening is to inform and remind people of what happened in Bhopal for 35 years ago.
